Are Cheap Treadmills Worth The Money?
Cheap treadmills can seem like a bargain, but won’t last nearly as long as
higher quality models. Inexpensive treadmills have lower quality motors, belts,
frames, rollers and electronics. Be cautious when looking at used treadmills for
sale. Sometimes you can find a high quality machine at a good price, but stay
away from cheap models because they won’t last.
The motor tends to be a problem with cheaper treadmills being sold. There are
two issues for buyers and sellers to consider when comparing motors. The first
is the rating system that is used on the motor. There are two ways to measure:
continuous duty and peak duty. Continuous duty is the continual level of power
being put out by the treadmill motor. Peak usage is the highest horse power the
motor can reach. Continuous duty is about half of peak duty, so if you have a
treadmill advertised as 2.5 peak duty, the continuous duty rating is probably
about 1.5. You want a model with a minimum of 2 HP continuous duty.
The other thing to watch out for when
comparing treadmill reviews is the size of the motor used in the model for
sale. You may find two treadmills both rated as 2.5 HP continuous duty. Look
more closely because the cheaper model will probably have a motor that is half
the size of the more expensive model. Bigger is better with treadmill motors.
The larger motor will stand up to heavier use and last for years longer than the
one used in cheaper treadmills.
Cheaper treadmills often don’t have as much speed or as many incline levels as
more expensive models sold. If you use a cheap model, you will quickly outgrow
it. You want to choose a treadmill that will allow you to increase your
intensity level as you become more fit. If not, you won’t be challenged enough
to get good results. Inexpensive models usually have lower weight limits; make
sure yours can hold your weight.
The final way to tell a treadmill is cheap is to look at the seller’s warranty.
Cheap machines have very short warranties, usually ninety days. Good machines
have at least five to ten year warranties and a few higher end models come with
lifetime user warranties. If you can’t afford to use anything else, looking for
a cheap treadmill on sale is better than nothing. Just keep in mind that it
won’t last. Use your cheaper model and start saving for a better one you might
find on sale the next time.
