Gym Ball Exercises
The fun part about gym ball
exercises is that it brings out the kid in all of us. For reasons that have long
baffled scientists and researchers, children love to sit on balls. The activity
is a challenge to them and probably improves their concentration. Who knew
trying to keep your balance could be so much fun with this simple fitness
equipment, and be so good for you?
As gym fitness equipment, balls
are known by several names: Exercise Ball, Gym, Swiss, Fitness or Fit Balls. A
ball can help children, regular exercise nuts, pregnant women, mothers,
non-athletes, back pain sufferers, the elderly, body builders — in other words,
just about anyone who performs their work in the sitting position and needs to
strengthen the back muscles.
Simple equipment such as a gym ball promotes a balanced and more active posture,
helping you work longer with less fatigue. When you use a traditional chair your
postural muscles are dormant (asleep). When you exercise by sitting on a ball,
your postural muscles are active. You can break the fatigue of poor, passive
sitting with fit balls at your work desk—provided you don’t fall over and have
the back of your head become one with the floor.
Core fitness training while seated on a ball’s round rolling surface challenges
your body in ways not possible with ordinary floor exercise or conventional
equipment found in gyms. These exercises are some of the most effective training
tools you can do for abs and back, as these muscle groups must work continuously
to maintain a natural, erect posture. With a small investment of under $50,
you’ll get a complete portable gym in a lightweight, inflatable fit ball.
Before purchasing balls to equip your home
fitness gym, you need to check that it is of
a “burst resistant” quality. This means that if the ball is punctured in any way
(while you’re exercising) that the ball will slowly deflate and not “pop.” Most
people use the large 65cm - 75cm size fitness balls to achieve the correct
seating height in relation to standard height desks and tables. (One other quick
note: Before you buy, check the size, since smaller balls are more appropriate
for youths and smaller adults.)
